This is a text edit window for the program
xSimpleEdit. It has features common to many
Macintosh windows in many different programs.
If you learn what they are for, you will know how
to use them whenever you see them.
The "scroll bars" that run along the left and
bottom of the window can be used to scroll through
the contents of the window. (You will need to
use the scroll bars in order to see the entire
contents of this window.) Click on an arrow,
or press the mouse button in an arrow and hold
it down, to scroll the window in small increments.
Click in the gray region of the scroll bar to
scroll more quickly. You can also drag the
"thumb box" that moves along the scroll bar to
scroll the contents of the window to a particular
location. In xSimpleEdit, the horizontal scroll bar can be used to scoll the window to reveal text that
extends past the right edge of the screen. (Note that xSimpleEdit does not automatically "wrap around" to
the next line when you type past the edge of the window. This differs from many word processors, but it is
the appropriate behavior for programs that you will use in later labs.)
Clicking in the "zoom box" at the upper right
will enlarge this window to fill the whole screen.
Clicking on it a second time will return it to its
original size.
You can change the size of the window by
dragging the "grow box" at the lower right. That
is, point to the box with the mouse. Then, press
and hold the mouse button while you move mouse.
An outline of the window will follow the mouse
as you move it. Release the mouse button when the
outline is the new shape you want for the window.
You can move the whole window, without
resizing it, by dragging the "title bar" that
runs along the top of the window.
Finally, you should note the "close box" in the
upper left corner of the window. Clicking in this
box will close the window. This is equivalent to
choosing the "Close" command from the "File" menu.
If you have made any changes to the window's
contents, you will be given a chance to save
those contents before the window closes. There
will also be a button that you can click on to
cancel closing the window.
